How to serve, by age
8–10 mo
Cut a soft natural cheese into thin strips to grasp (sized to age), or grate into soft foods.
1 yr+
Cheese crumbles and soft cheese patties, as the family eats them.
Choking risk: Low
A chewy strip of cheese can be swallowed whole and lodge. Soft cheeses go on as thin strips; firm cheeses arrive grated.
If choking ever happens: act immediately — call emergency services (911 in the US) and seek emergency care. Do not wait.
Allergens
Cheese contains cow's-milk protein, a common allergen. Start small and watch the response.
Common questions
- How do I pick a baby-friendly cheese?
- Three words: pasteurized (milk safety), low sodium (kidney load), natural (not a high-sodium processed product).
Practical tips
- Mozzarella and cream cheese are gentler, lower-sodium starters.
- Cheese stirred into mashed potato rarely gets refused.
