How to serve, by age
6–8 mo
Choose a ripe, soft fruit, peel and cut thick strips; roll them in rice cereal if they feel slippery.
9–11 mo
Small, soft pieces.
12 mo+
Pieces, or a whole soft half to gnaw.
Choking risk: Moderate
Firm kiwi does not chew down — serve only ripe-soft fruit. The seeds are tiny and need no handling.
If choking ever happens: act immediately — call emergency services (911 in the US) and seek emergency care. Do not wait.
Allergens
Kiwi is not among the eight most common food allergens (milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish, shellfish). Any food can cause a reaction in principle — introduce new foods one at a time, during the day, and watch your baby.
Common questions
- My baby's mouth corners turned red and itchy — what now?
- Kiwi often irritates the skin around the mouth; mild redness usually settles after washing. If the rash spreads or your baby is clearly uncomfortable, stop serving and ask your pediatrician.
Practical tips
- Ripen a hard kiwi in a bag with an apple or banana.
- Green kiwi runs tart; gold runs sweet — start with gold.
