Each floret comes with its own built-in handle. Steamed until soft, broccoli is a classic first vegetable for babies feeding themselves.

How to serve, by age

6–8 mo

Steam small florets until the stem squashes easily between your fingers. Hand them over crown-first, so the floret top works as a handle for your baby to gnaw.

9–11 mo

Steam soft, then cut into small florets or chop and stir into congee or soft noodles.

12 mo+

Serve soft small florets plain or with a light dip of sesame paste.

Choking risk: Low

The stem is the hazard: crisp, undercooked stems do not chew down. Steam until the whole floret — stem included — mashes under gentle pressure.

If choking ever happens: act immediately — call emergency services (911 in the US) and seek emergency care. Do not wait.

Allergens

Broccoli is not among the eight most common food allergens (milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish, shellfish). Any food can cause a reaction in principle — introduce new foods one at a time, during the day, and watch your baby.

Common questions

My baby pulls a face at the bitterness — give up?
Mild bitterness is normal. Pair it with sweet vegetables like pumpkin or corn, and keep offering — accepting a new vegetable often takes ten or more tries.

Practical tips

  • Soak florets in cold water for ten minutes to flush out grit, then rinse.
  • Steam rather than boil — florets hold their shape and flavor.
