from 6 mochoking risk: Low

Steamed and mashed, potato is a soft, versatile base for early meals. A sprouted or green-tinged potato goes in the trash whole — that rule has no exceptions.

Your food log

How to serve, by age

6–8 mo

Peel, steam until tender and mash, thinning with a little breast milk, formula or water to a soft texture.

9–11 mo

Steamed-soft small pieces and strips, or soft potato patties.

12 mo+

Steamed or boiled pieces and soft mash, however the family eats them.

Choking risk: Low

Cooked potato is soft and low risk. Fried, crispy forms like fries are not appropriate for young babies.

If choking ever happens: act immediately — call emergency services (911 in the US) and seek emergency care. Do not wait.

Allergens

Potato is not among the eight most common food allergens (milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish, shellfish). Any food can cause a reaction in principle — introduce new foods one at a time, during the day, and watch your baby.

Common questions

The potato sprouted — can I cut the sprout off and use the rest?
No. A sprouted or green potato is discarded whole — cooking does not make it fit to eat.

Practical tips

  • Yellow-fleshed potatoes mash fluffier — best for purées.
  • Keep mash one day refrigerated; reheat until steaming before serving.
