How to serve, by age
6–8 mo
Steam, take only the broad mid-section, press through it layer by layer to find bones, then mash to a purée.
9–11 mo
Hairtail purée stirred into congee, or mixed with potato mash.
12 mo+
Carefully deboned pieces of cooked flesh.
Choking risk: Moderate
Hairtail's fine bones are needle-sharp and firm; deboning takes extra care. Rub every piece between your fingers before feeding.
If choking ever happens: act immediately — call emergency services (911 in the US) and seek emergency care. Do not wait.
Allergens
Fish is a common allergen. Start small and watch the response.
Common questions
- Braised or pan-fried?
- Infancy is steamed-only territory: heavy oil and salt do not fit, and braising needs the salt cut drastically or dropped.
Practical tips
- The silver fat layer carries much of the fishiness — scrape part of it off.
- Choose narrow, mid-size fish; the flesh is more tender.
