from 6 mochoking risk: Low

From thin congee to thick congee to soft rice runs the main staircase of staple textures. Congee itself carries little iron — build the bowl around iron-rich mix-ins.

How to serve, by age

6–7 mo

Cook a 1-to-10 rice-to-water congee until the grains burst, then blend to a fine, smooth paste.

8–10 mo

Move to 1-to-7 and 1-to-5 congee — grains soft but visible, for swallowing and early chewing practice.

11 mo+

Soft rice at roughly 1-to-2 to 1-to-2.5 rice-to-water, distinct grains but tender.

Choking risk: Low

Thin congee is not a concern. A thick, dry mass swallowed by the mouthful can gag — keep the consistency matched to age.

If choking ever happens: act immediately — call emergency services (911 in the US) and seek emergency care. Do not wait.

Allergens

Congee & Soft Rice is not among the eight most common food allergens (milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish, shellfish). Any food can cause a reaction in principle — introduce new foods one at a time, during the day, and watch your baby.

Common questions

Is congee "low in nutrition"?
Congee supplies energy and water, not density — the fix is what goes in. Minced meat, chopped vegetables and egg yolk cooked into the same bowl make it a meal.

Practical tips

  • Cook a big pot, freeze portions in ice-cube trays, finish within two weeks.
  • Minced-pork-and-vegetable congee is the classic one-bowl meal.
