From congee to soft rice to regular rice is the last step of the staple staircase. Firm, separate grains are not for beginners.

Your food log

How to serve, by age

10–12 mo

Soft rice cooked with more water than adult rice, spooned over or handed to your baby to grab.

12 mo+

Normal family rice, checked to be chewable, eaten with dishes alongside.

Choking risk: Moderate

Firm whole grains and compressed rice balls swallowed by the mouthful can gag. Rice is also dry — serve soup or water alongside.

If choking ever happens: act immediately — call emergency services (911 in the US) and seek emergency care. Do not wait.

Allergens

Rice is not among the eight most common food allergens (milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish, shellfish). Any food can cause a reaction in principle — introduce new foods one at a time, during the day, and watch your baby.

Common questions

My baby grabs whole handfuls and scatters rice everywhere.
That is the normal self-feeding stage; lay a mat and bib and let the practice happen. Mess is how the skill gets built.

Practical tips

  • Add a small handful of millet or oats to the pot for varied grains.
  • Refrigerate leftovers no more than one day; reheat until steaming throughout.
